Most forages can be divided into two general categories: grasses

and legumes

First let's look at grasses. They are separated into warm and cool season species.

Some grasses grow best at different times of the year. The cool season grasses, shown in green, do best from about April to June and mid-September to mid-October. The warm season grasses, shown in blue, produce best from about June to September.
