West Virginia University's
Cooperative Extension Service effort in tree fruit at the Kearneysville Tree
Fruit Research and Education Center (KTFREC) consists of 0.7 FTE in Entomology
and
0.3 FTE in Plant Pathology (nothing in Horticulture). Two faculty members
also hold joint appointments in the Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry, and
Consumer Sciences (i.e. entomology and plant pathology). An outline of the
team's extension activities is provided below. More specific information on the
research programs related to tree fruits can be found on the discipline pages.
I. Tree Fruit Schools.
Conducted at Kearneysville and Romney in
March, and at other locations upon request.
II. Orchard Newsletter.
The Orchard Monitor newsletter
is prepared and distributed (print and web site versions) biweekly from April through
August, with single issues in February, March, and November (14 issues).
III. Fruit Grower Meetings.
Conducted monthly (April-August) in
Berkeley/Jefferson and Hampshire Counties. Entomology updates are also provided at
Northern Virginia meetings.
IV. Fruit Grower Visits.
Visit Eastern Panhandle orchards to solve
problems and obtain information for Extension media outreach.
V. Diagnostic Services.
Pest and disease identification of
submitted samples and via phone inquiry.
VI. Grower Demonstration Trials.
Research conducted in grower orchards to
evaluate crop protection strategies.
VII. Orchard Field Day.
Annual event of exhibits, tours,
demonstrations and barbecue for fruit growers.
