Western Maryland Goat Field Day and Sale
Washington County Agricultural Education Center - Boonsboro, MD
The top performing bucks in the Western Maryland Pasture-Based Meat Goat Performance Test will be sold. While on test, the bucks are evaulated for growth performance (on pasture), parasite resitance and resilience, and carcass merit. Buck consigners may nominate does for the sale.

PA Sheep Symposium - "Surviving the Economy"

A Sheep Symposium entitled "Surviving the Economy" will be held Saturday, October 24, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Livestock Evaluation Center in PA Furnance, PA. A Beginning Shepherd's Workshop will be held Sunday, October 25, 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon, at the Penn State Sheep Center in University Park, PA.
The Sheep Symposium will include the following topics and speakers: Live lamb evaluation (Dr. Paul Kuber); Evaluating your lambs for meat quality (Dr. Paul Kuber); Muslim religion and high Holy days (Habib Ghanim); Lamb and goat marketing to the Muslim Market (Feizal, Continental Livestock Company; Selling natural lamb at farmers' markets (Dave Albert, Jr.) ; Selling live lambs for custom slaughter (Katherine Harrison); and a marketing panel discussion.
The Beginning Shepherd's Workshop will include the following topics and speakers: Handling your flock (Laurie Hubbard); Sheep selection (Dick Kuzemchak); Nutrition (Harold Harpster); Health: common diseases and basic necropsy (Dr. Art Hattel); and Lambing time (Dr. Lester Griel).
Pre-registration is requested by October 7. Late registrations will not be guaranteed meals. Checks should be made payable to PSWGA and sent to Greg Hubbard, PSWGA Treasurer, at 1535 Purdue Mountain Road, Bellefonte, PA 16623.

2009 Lambing and Kidding School
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Waldorf, Maryland
The featured speaker will be Dr. Susan Kerr, an Extension Educator from Washington State University. Dr. Kerr will give several presentations at the school, including performing a live necropsy (of a baby goat and/or lamb).
Additional topics include: Preparing for lambing and kidding, lambing and kidding in the fall, lambing and kidding for the first time, composting animal mortality, medicating sheep and goats, general health care, raising orphans, first aid for sheep and goats, feeding the pregnant and lactating female, and anthelmintic (dewormer) resistance.
Pre-registration for the school is required by November 6. The cost of participation is $45 per person. The registration fee includes the program, morning refreshments, lunch, and resource material. Additional family or farm members are $35. Extra resource material is $10.
