What classes should I be taking in High School? Take the highest level math, science and English classes available to you.

Is it hard to get in to veterinary school? Just over 1/4 of our students who applied were accepted to veterinary school. The national acceptance rate was less than 30% in 1999.

West Virginia Doesn't have a veterinary school, so where do the residents go? Because West Virginia doesn't have a veterinary school, the state contracts with three schools so there is a higher chance of qualified applicants being accepted and pay a lower tuition than out of state students. West Virginia residents may apply as a contract student to The Ohio State University, The University of Georgia, and Tuskegee Institute.

When should I apply to veterinary school? Students should begin the application process in July or August of the year preceding the desired admission. The deadline for applications at OSU and UGA is October 1st. The deadline at Tuskegee is December 1st, but application submission by September 13th is preferred.

What are the requirements to apply? Veterinary schools require that the students take the GRE general test before applying. Some schools like UGA and Oklahoma State require the GRE Biology test. Where can I find information about vet school addresses? Addresses can be found on the vet school websites. Links can be found by clicking on the links button on the left-hand side of this page. Veterinary school pamphlets and brochures are also available in the Davis-Michael Scholars Office, Room G054 in the Agriculture Building.

Do I need to work for a veterinarian? All contract schools encourage some sort of experience with a veterinarian before applying.

How much does it cost to become a veterinarian? First you need to complete at least three years of undergraduate classes. For a West Virginia resident to attend WVU, three years of tuition will cost $9,720. Then veterinary school lasts four years. The average yearly tuition at West Virginia's contract schools is $12,000. Remember, this is just tuition and does not include room, board and other expenses. In 1998, the average debt a veterinary student graduate with was nearly $60,000-$80,000.

How much will I make once I am a veterinarian? In 2004, recent graduates averaged a salary of between $47,000-$50,999 depending on work in a private clinic practice or public/corporate employment. For more detailed salary and employment information, click here.

What does the job market for veterinarians look like in the future? One estimate shows a 14.5% increase in demand by 2015.

What is the average grade point average of students admitted? West Virginia University students accepted to contract schools for the year 2002 averaged 3.65.

Are there more men or women in veterinary school? Women made up 73.4% of the enrollment for the 2004-2005 academic year. This is similar to WVU's Animal and Veterinary Science division.

What if I change my mind about veterinary school? What if I do not get in? If majoring in Animal Science in preparation for veterinary school, there is no need to worry if your plans change. With the courses you take within the major, you are prepared to apply to numerous graduate programs. The courses allow you to apply not only to veterinary school, but also to Medical, Dental, and any other Graduate Study Programs.
