Horticulture
is the science of production, processing, and
marketing of fruit, vegetable, greenhouse and
landscape crops. Students in the horticulture option
study the physiology, culture, harvesting, quality
control, sales and utilization of horticultural
crops. Horticulture prepares students for careers
such as orchard, vegetable farm, or greenhouse
managers, landscape contractors, golf course and
park horticulturists, seed and supply company
representatives, state and federal nursery
inspectors, and educators in schools and extension.
Horticulture is generally divided
in 4 commodity groups
- Floriculture
- Landscape/Nursery
- Olericulture (vegetables)
- Pomology (fruits)
The horticulture program at WVU focuses on
nursery production, landscape installation and
maintenance, and floriculture without ignoring the
fact that fruit and vegetable production are an
important part of a well-rounded horticulture
education. Additional information on our program,
classes, and the application process can be found on
the Courses and
Undergraduate Program
pages of this website.
