WVU Organic Research Project |

| The goal of the economics component is to develop enterprise budgets (i.e., to identify the costs, revenues and net returns) corresponding to the individual components of the organic farm (market garden; field crops; sheep) during the 3-year transition period. The idea is to provide information that can help producers who are seeking to make a transition to organic farming make better decisions. Experimental data will be combined with price and cost data from secondary (published) sources for this purpose. Ideally, several years of experimental data are needed to account for the variability in yields -- and therefore, revenues -- that, no doubt, will influence expected profitability and risk during the transition to organic production methods. In addition, results from this study are site specific. However, results from this study, combined with results from other similar studies in the region, can serve as a useful guide to Appalachian farmers seeking to make their operations more sustainable. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Gerard E.
