WVU Organic Research Project

Project Update (9/24/01)

Fall Wind-Down

  • The farm is preparing for winter. We are pulling plants, and seeding bare ground with a mixture of rye and vetch to prevent soil erosion and provide green manure in the spring.

Apple Sales

  • The much-anticipated apples have arrived from the university farm in the Eastern Panhandle. This is the time to buy apples for the winter.

What's ripe?

  • Potatoes -- We had an excellent harvest of delicious potatoes.
  • Basil -- The last of the basil will be harvested this week, before the frosts we can expect in October.
  • Tomatoes -- There are still lots of tomatoes coming out of our research trials. Available by the bushel for all the canners and sauce makers out there.
  • Peppers -- Beautiful green peppers abound.
  • Beans -- The fall green beans have been blossoming, and should be ripe before the frost.

  •

Buy our produce at the Mountain People's Market, the Saturday Market on High St., select local restaurants, and the Thursday ice cream sales at the back loading dock of the agriculture building.
