2009 West Virginia Agriculture Mechanics CDE

The 2009 agricultural mechanics contest at the State Agriculture Career Development Events will include the following:

September 22, 2009 Events (All Contestants in NRCCE Room A & B) – 2:00-4:15 pm

Written Test  

70 minutes

The participant will complete a 100 question multiple choice test that focuses on the national theme of Plant Production Systems with questions from the following categories: Machinery and Equipment Systems, Industry and Marketing Systems, Energy Systems, Structural Systems, and Environmental-Natural Resource Systems.

Tool Identification  

20 minutes

The participant is required to identify 20 basic hand tools from a PowerPoint presentation.

Small Engine Parts ID

10 minutes

The participant is required to identify 10 small engine parts from a PowerPoint presentation.

Farm Machinery ID

20 minutes

The student is required to identify 20 pieces of farm machinery used in plant and crop production from a PowerPoint presentation.

September 23, 2009 Events (Top 15 Teams and Top 20 Individuals), Ag Sci Annex– 9:15-12:00

Crop and Plant System Scenario

30 minutes

The participant will evaluate a scenario that entails chemically pre-treating land for planting, seeding the land, and applying a herbicide to the land after planting.  The student will have to calculate the application ratio, identify the calibration settings for the required equipment, and identify the amount of seed and chemical required for the amount of area being covered.

Oxy-Acetylene

20 minutes

Oxy-Acetylene Welding/Brazing – categories may include: flat, fillet, lap and/or butt. [Participants who cannot properly prepare the tank set-up (correct psi) will not be allowed to complete this portion of the contest]

MIG Welding

20 minutes

MIG WeldingMay include: flat, fillet, lap and/or butt. Students will use the following: Lincoln 255 welders, ¼” Steel, .40 wire.

Soldering Pipe

20 minutes

The participant is required to perform soldering skills and will be evaluated on correctness of procedures, time, physical appearance, and the structural integrity of the product.

Farm Machinery Parts Identification

20 minutes

The student is required to identify 10 parts of a crop seeder and 10 parts of a crop sprayer.

*All participants are required to provide their own non-programmable calculator for both days of the competition.  Those using a programmable calculator will be disqualified. Students are required to provide all proper safety materials for the second day contests.

Use of Technology in WV Career Development Events

The use of all electronic devices; including but not limited to cell phones, BlackBerries, PDAs, MP3 players, programmable calculators; are prohibited during all West Virginia Career Development Events.  If an event requires the use of calculators, the event coordinator will provide exact specifications on the type(s) of devices (including functions) that will be permitted.

 Failure to comply with this regulation will result in the elimination of the entire team from competition.  A letter will be sent to the school principal and superintendent by the state staff detailing the reasons for the dismissal.

 Use of Reference Materials in WV Career Development Events

Students participating in West Virginia Career Development Events are prohibited from bringing reference materials, paper, and/or other aids into the contest area unless the materials/aids are specified by the event coordinators in the official rules and regulations.  The exception, all students are permitted to use a standard clipboard.  Cover sheets will be provided for all contestants in all contests.  Contestants participating in contests with oral reasons will be provided two sheets of unlined white paper to take notes.

Teams of Less than Three Members

Students may compete in a Career Development Event even if their school does not have a full team (3 or 4 members).  If a school has less than 3 team members, the students are only eligible for individual awards. A school may enter only one team (maximum 4 students) per event. (Passed 11/6/2006)
