Capstone Experience

In compliance with recommendations by the WVU Commission on Academic Standards Report, a capstone experience was implementd for students entering the West Virignia University, starting on January 1, 2001. This experience requires the completion of either a senior thesis (ARE 496) or an internship (ARE 491) as their capstone experience. Each student will be responsible for developing his/her own proposal for an internship or senior thesis. These proposals would be developed during when the student is enrolled in the Seminar class (ARE 494). Each proposal will be reviewed by ARE undergraduate advisors.

The capstone experiences entails 3 to 6 credit hours and occurs during the student's last semester or in the summer prior to graduation. In addition to a written document, students who complete a senior thesis will be required to give a presentation on their research. Students who select an internship will be required to complete 75 hours of internship experience per credit hour and to submit a written report of their internship experience. Student reaction to the capstone experience has been positive as it provides an opportunity to draw on various knowledgbe and skills acquired at WVU.

Related Resources for Graduate Students

Students in our graduate programs benefit from the availability of three computer laboratories in our building and by the presence of the Natural Resource Analysis Center (NRAC). NRAC is a multi-disciplinary research and teaching facility in the Division of Resource Management that provides research, teaching, and service in environmental and natural resource issues with a geo-spatial context.

Another valuable resource is the Regional Research Institute (RRI). The RRI sponsors programs and activities that advance our knowledge of processes of regional socio-economic change, with an emphasis on lagging regions. Ours are global interests, but we especially encourage research relevant to West Virginia and Appalachia. The RRI is located on the downtown campus of West Virginia University. Founded in 1965, the RRI has an internationally recognized reputation as a center of excellence in regional research.
