Design Approach and Philosophy
What follows is an excerpt of presentation materials from the initial meeting April 27, 1993, discussing the design of the Westvaco Natural Resources Center, provided by Robert J. Summerfeldt, A.I.A., Registered Architect, President of Architectural Planning and Design, Inc., of Huntington, WV.
"For any client or construction project, a fundamental truth
is that the basic planning
of
the building must truly and completely meet the client's needs and desires,
and do so within the project's budget and time framework. Therefore, accurate
programming is the crucial first design step.
"Once the project is thus defined, then the required spaces and facilities can be created and molded to best suit the intended uses. The materials used in the fabric of the building must be carefully selected and assembled for both aesthetic and functional considerations.
"Preliminary
thoughts on the design of this project include a very dramatic sweep of
roof with large overhangs, and extending somewhat beyond the enclosed space
to create the pavilion area mentioned in the original program. Wood columns,
beams and trusses used to frame the roof and define the space long with
significant areas of glass and passive solar orientation, log walls and
native stone for piers, fireplaces and accents should result in a very
compelling structure, well-suited to display West Virginia's forest products.
"For this project, log and heavy timber construction is the
obvious choice for
structural uses and the basic enclosure. A variety of West Virginia woods
may be incorporated, particularly for finishes, trim, doors, and other
uses, within the limitations of code and other requirements."
