Progress Report:

The major purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the 4-H Charting Program on the optimal development of adolescents in West Virginia. The Charting program was developed for West Virginia 4-H members over 70 years ago. Although many changes in the 4-H Charting program have occurred over the years, the goals remain the same -- to encourage self-understanding and to aid in planning personal goals based on that understanding. The Charting program has recently undergone a major revision and expansion. Hence, the present study was formulated to examine the effects of the revised materials. This study requires an experimental design that consists of one pretest and two posttests conducted among approximately 300 4-H Charting members and a control group of approximately 400 non-Charters from several West Virginia high schools. The self-report measures completed by both groups include assessments of identity formation, self-esteem and self-concept, and skills in areas of leadership, decision-making, communication, social competency, and coping. Demographic information, as well as information on involvement in clubs, organizations, and other activities, is obtained. Currently, the pretest phase of the study is underway and will be completed in March 1999. From March through August 1999, 4-H members will complete the Charting program. The first posttest will occur in the Fall of 1999 and the second posttest in the Spring 2000. Data will be analyzed to measure progress made by Charters in the constructs under investigation. The control group will serve as a maturational control to determine if changes are made in the areas of investigation of those who are not in Charting.
