Progress Report:

The Forestry Heritage Trail Project officially got off the ground on November 27, 2001 when work by the Project Investigators and Project Coordinators culminated in multistate meeting with over 80 in attendance. The participants at this meeting represented diverse communities, agencies, forest and tourism industries, and WVU Colleges and Extension Centers. At issue was the creation of a heritage tourism theme based on forest and forestry heritage that could extend from the mountain counties of Maryland down through the high mountain counties of West Virginia. At this meeting people shared their experience of what forest heritage means to themselves, and potentially to the communities of the region that could benefit from increased tourism dollars resulting from a successful tourism project. The meeting ended with the group dividing into six task groups: 1) organization and sustainability, 2) networking and communications, 3) asset mapping, 4) interpretation, 5) business and infrastructure, and 6)marketing. These groups were slated to meet in the early part of 2002 prior to the next full group meeting scheduled for April 3-4, 2002.
