Applicability of Eco-Labeling To Appalachian Hardwood Products
Investigators: Armstrong, J. P.
Performing Department: Forestry -- 1240
Start Date: 10/01/1999
Termination Date: 09/30/2004
Reporting period: 01/01/2001 to 12/31/2001
Progress Report:
A survey of approximately 700 architectural woodwork firms located throughout the United States was begun in 2001. The survey was mailed to member firms of the Architectural Woodwork Institute. The purpose of the survey is to determine to what extent their clients request eco-labeled wood and other environmentally-friendly products. The survey is currently in the follow-up stage. Results to date indicate that the market for certified wood products within the architectural woodwork industry may best be characterized as a niche market. Most clients who request certified products are businesses and some support a sufficient volume of business for at least two of the architectural woodwork suppliers to obtain "chain of custody" certification through the Forest Stewardship Council. Survey respondents were not very familiar with certfication programs although most had heard of the Forest Stewardship Council or one of its American affiliates or the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. There is uncertainty within most firms as to whether offering certified wood products would be beneficial to their marketing efforts. One graduate student is supported by this project.

Impact:
The impact of the survey begun in 2001 is expected to provide insight into demand for certified wood products, especially those bearing an eco-label, in the high end architectural woodwork market. This information will be useful in giving some direction to firms as they decide what course to pursue in providing certified products.
