FIELD CROP VARIETY TESTING
Investigators: Balasko, J. A.
Performing Department: Plant & Soil Sciences -- 1825

Reporting period: 01/01/2001 to 12/31/2001
Progress Report:
Corn hybrids from seven companies were planted in replicated trials at four University farms in 2001. In all, a total of 68 hybrids were placed into early or late trials at appropriate locations based upon grain moisture data from previous trials and company maturity data. Hybrids were evaluated for yield, susceptibility to lodging, and grain moisture percentage at one or more of the locations. The trials at Wardensville were abandoned because of poor stand and damage from the European corn borer. Results of the 2000 trials were published, and a similar publication is being prepared for the 2001 trials.

Impact:
Evaluation of corn hybrids in West Virginia at locations that differ in climatic and soils aspects aids farmers in choosing adapted hybrids for their farms. Data suggest that in most years, farmers can increase State average grain yield by more than 50% by improving cultural practices and choosing well-adapted hybrids.
